IDeAL KEMRI and the SSACAB Programme are proud to spotlight Kevin Wamae Ph.D., a SSACAB Postdoctoral Fellow whose work is helping shape the future of cholera control in Africa. πŸ“’ In a new preprint (https://lnkd.in/dsVUvFiq), Wamae and colleagues review 106 studies (1979–2024) to map the current state of cholera research in Kenya, what’s known, where the evidence is missing, and how science can guide better prevention and response strategies. Despite decades of research, cholera continues to impact Kenyan communities: Over 12,000 cases and 200 deaths between 2022–2024. Recurring outbreaks fueled by limited access to safe water, poor sanitation, weak surveillance, and climate shocks like floods and droughts. Tools like rapid diagnostics and genomic tracking are available, but inaccessible to most local labs

πŸ§ͺ Key actions to end cholera include:

βœ… Strengthening water and sanitation infrastructure

βœ… Improving outbreak monitoring

βœ… Expanding vaccine coverage

βœ… Integrating lab and climate data for better forecasting and response

This research was made possible with the support of IDeAL-KEMRI and the SSACAB Programme. It’s a crucial step toward turning evidence into action.
