SSACAB II congratulates PhD Fellow Abebaw Gedef on his selection as an abstract reviewer for the School of Public Health Research Day which was held on the 6th of November 2025. In this role, Abebaw reviewed eight research abstracts presented at the event. This contribution reflects both the quality of his training and his growing expertise as an early-career researcher. It also demonstrates how SSACAB fellows are actively strengthening the research culture within African academic institutions.

Through this experience, Abebaw gained valuable insight into the peer-review process, deepened his understanding of diverse research study designs, and engaged with current public health priorities being addressed across the region. The exercise not only sharpened his skills in critical appraisal but also reinforced the importance of rigorous scientific communication and mentorship within the research community. Abebaw expressed his gratitude to Dr Pamela Maluleke and Dr Michelle Brear (PhD) for the opportunity to participate in this meaningful academic activity and for their continued guidance.

Why this matters
Peer review is the cornerstone of scientific progress. For emerging researchers, participating in the review process builds analytical thinking, promotes academic integrity, and cultivates leadership in evidence-based research. By engaging fellows like Abebaw in these processes, SSACAB is helping to develop the next generation of research mentors and reviewers who will uphold high standards of scientific excellence and transparency across Africa’s public health landscape. Through initiatives like this, SSACAB continues to build a sustainable network of biostatisticians and health scientists capable of evaluating, communicating, and applying research that improves lives on the continent.
